1.2 Basic Needs Of Animals

Like the needs of humans, the basic needs of animals are food, water, air and shelter.

Animals
FOOD AND WATER

Animals need food and water to grow and stay healthy.

AIR

Animals need air to stay alive.

The grasshopper in container P is dead because there is no air. It cannot breathe.
The grasshopper in container Q is alive because there is air.

SHELTER

Animals need shelter to protect themselves from dangers, the sun and the rain.

Caves

Bears and bats live in caves. Caves protect these animals from their enemies, the sun and the rain.

Nests

Birds and bees build nests. Nests protect the eggs and the young.

Cages

Pets like birds, hamsters and dogs are kept in cages to prevent them from being eaten by other bigger animals.

Holes

Earthworms, rabbits and rats shelter in holes in the ground.
